Ferrari announced it would reinstate the role of the inline six-cylinder engine in its new sports car model offering Thursday 24 June 2021.
As reported by Autopro, the six-cylinder engine is now included in the new model called the Ferrari 296 GTB, where the name is symbolic of the following:
The six-cylinder engine in the V layout actually has a displacement of 2,992 CC (3.0 litres), and it is the first V6 fitted to a modern Ferrari car since the Ferrari Dino model.
In terms of power, this twin-turbo V6 engine is capable of producing 654 hp and assisted by an electric motor on the rear axle (164 hp), which allows the Ferrari 296 GTB to have as high as 818 hp. and 740Nm.
The engine is the first unit to be equipped with an IHI turbocharger in the centre V configuration and is able to offer a lower gravity point, while the combustion chamber development is borrowed from its sibling SF90 Stradale.
With the help of an electric motor, the Ferrari 296 GTB is capable of accelerating as fast as 2.9 seconds from 0-100 km/h. Acceleration to 200 km/h takes 7.3 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 330 km/h.
For comparison, the McLaren Artura (also equipped with a V6 hybrid engine) has a power of 671 hp/720 Nm, accelerates from 0-100 km/h in three seconds and a top speed that is almost identical to the 296 GTB.
Just like the SF90 Stradale, this Ferrari 296 GTB comes with an eight-speed ratio twin-clutch transmission.
The battery has a capacity of 7.45 kWh, which allows zero-emission movement as far as 25 km.
Due to the addition of a hybrid power train unit, the dry weight of the Ferrari 296 GTB is only around 1,470 kg even after adding the optional Asetto Fiorano handling package.
The package features lightweight materials such as carbon fibre and Lexan rear windshield, carbon fibre wheels wrapped in Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires and a special livery kite that pays homage to the Le Mans 250 racing engine.
The exterior design of this Ferrari 296 GTB is a perfect blend of simplicity and functionality, as is the 250 LM engine.
It features an active rear spoiler reminiscent of the LaFerrari model, while the windshield design is similar to that of limited-edition models like the J50.
The cabin space finish is heavily borrowed from the SF90 Stradale model, which consists of a main digital screen behind the wheel, as well as a small display screen for side passenger use.
It is likely that the same hybrid engine configuration will be offered on future Ferrari models, including the 2022 Ferrari Purosangue SUV that will appear in the next few months.
