Tips to Do the Correct and Safe Car Battery Jumper by AutoMoto651 - Auto Moto 651. The old car was not used due to limited activities due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the ban on going home. More being at home makes the car idle or not in use. As a result, the vehicle is sometimes difficult to turn on even though it has started repeatedly. Why? It could be that the problem is with the battery.

A long time hanging out can make the car battery come up short or “tired” if the car engine is never turned on. Although the lifespan of a car battery is often unpredictable, usually vehicle owners will realize when the car cannot start because the car battery is already weak. When the car battery shows signs of weakening, several things often happen. But once again, this is often ignored because the car can still start when it starts.

When the car battery is “worn out” or no longer able to start the engine and electricity in the car, the quickest solution is to jump the battery. Or a technique to drain electricity from another battery that is still good to a problematic car battery. At least in an emergency, the car can still be started to get to the repair shop or place of destination.

To do a battery jumper, you need another battery that is a “donor” for a battery that is worn out. The battery can come from another car or a battery that is not being used but is in good condition. Then, how is the correct way to jump the car battery? Here are the tips:

Use Special Cables

First, prepare the equipment needed. Battery jumpers don’t need a lot of tools, just batteries and jumper cables. You can use a battery from another car. After finding a suitable battery as a donor, also prepare the jumper cables. However, beforehand make sure the battery-operated is still optimal. This means that the battery voltage or power is in good condition. It’s a good idea also to choose a battery from a similar car. Usually, similar vehicles have a battery with the same voltage rating. This is the most important thing because you have to use a cable specifically for battery jumpers. This is because the electric current when starting the car is very high, so you have to use a cable with a material that is thick enough. Never use makeshift cables because the potential for a short circuit is quite immense during a battery jumper. Jumper cables are relatively easy to find and sell at auto accessories stores.

Using a car with the same engine capacity

Next is to use a similar car or with the same engine capacity as the car you are using. This is because usually, similar cars have the same battery voltage.

Position Cars Adjacent

The next process is to position the two cars so that the jumper cables can reach each battery because generally, the jumper cables are not too long.

When doing the jumper, the car must be stationary. For manual transmission cars, position them in neutral transmission. As for the automatic transmission car, position it in the P transmission or park it. Don’t forget to activate the handbrake to keep the car in position. The entire car’s electrical system must also be in a dead condition when doing the jumper. Unplug the contacts to make sure the entire electrical system is off. After that, open the hood and check the position of your car battery.

Connecting the Jumper Cables

As a preparation, make sure all conditions of the car engine are not turned on, then pay close attention to the position of the positive and negative poles of the two batteries. Usually, the two poles of the battery terminal are respectively marked with a positive (+) and negative (-) symbol, and another sign is also found on the red cap on the positive pole. If the battery terminal poles are dirty, please clean them first with a cloth.

Connect the red jumper wire clamp to the positive (+) pole of a regular battery (car A). Then connect another red jumper wire clamp to the problematic battery pole (car B). Then attach the negative jumper wire to the negative pole of car battery A and attach the other side to the negative pole of car battery B.

Start the engine

After that, turn on the engine of car A and set the engine speed to above 1,000 rpm. Then try starting car engine B. After starting, you may need to leave the engine running for a few minutes to recharge a worn-out battery.

Let stand for a while until the electric current from the donor battery reaches the exhausted battery. Then, if the worn-out battery looks back to life, the application of the car battery jumper method can be ended.

Cars with suitable alternator components usually don’t take long to jump. For this reason, maintaining the alternator components is also necessary to check regularly.

Remove the Jumper Cables

The final step in the car battery jumper method is to remove the jumper cables. Once the worn-out battery gets enough power to start the engine, you can remove the jumper wire. Stay careful in doing it.

Disconnect the negative pole cable (usually black) connected to the damaged battery first. Then remove the negative pole cable connected to the donor battery. After the negative cable is disconnected, remove the positive pole wire (usually red) on the damaged battery. Finally, remove the positive line on the donor battery.

If your car engine still won’t start or has no reaction at all, try leaving it for a while so that the charging process can be more intense.

It must be remembered that the step to jump the battery is an emergency. You still have to bring the car to an authorized repair shop for further checking. Mitsubishi has provided official batteries for Mitsubishi vehicles labelled MMKSI Genuine Battery for Mitsubishi Xpander, Pajero Sport and Triton, which can be found if it is necessary to replace it at official workshops.

“Battery maintenance is a relatively easy thing, but users often miss it. To treat the battery’s condition, users can start the vehicle regularly for at least 5 minutes every day. In addition, we advise Mitsubishi Motors vehicle users to use official Mitsubishi batteries. Apart from guaranteed quality, MMKSI also provides a guarantee for one year, or 10,000km, whichever is achieved first, “explained Boediarto, Head of After Sales & CS Operation Group of PT MMKSI.
